Identifying Tutors, Their Subjects & Qualifications:
HOW DO I SELECT A TUTOR?
When selecting a Tutor consider their entire profile including: bio, qualifications, compatible subjects, location (time zone if online), availability and pricing when making your decision. It is best to narrow your search down to a few Tutors and message them individually. Pay attention to their responses and attention to details. Whereas one Tutor might appear just right initially, after chatting you may feel there is a better connection with another Tutor. Making a positive personal connection is important. Discuss expectations, pricing, cancellation policy, payment process, where the lessons will take place and how often. Giving careful consideration to all of these aspects will help you find the best fit Tutor and have a clear agreement allowing you to move forward. We suggest that your first message should be a short introduction of yourself and your tutoring needs. This will set the tone and open the door to finding just the right person for you.
Who qualifies as a Tutor?

Who Can Create Profiles & Needed Requirements:
Who can create a profile?
Users with a verified email or Facebook account can create a profile. Tutors can create public profiles and students can view them. Students are able to create their own profiles and publish a job posting, but these remain private, viewable only to members with verified accounts. Students are not required to publish a job posting if they prefer to search for Tutors themselves and not be identified by Tutors. If a Student opts to post their job offering then interested Tutors can send a push notification to the Student. This provides more opportunities for Students to identify Tutors and for Tutors to identify potential clients. Also, since Tutors cannot directly message Students initially, this allows Students to have control over who they want to be in contact with.
Additionally, App users can have both a Student and Tutor account since many Tutors are also students themselves wanting to learn new skills, and vice versa. For more information on why you may want to use Tutor Around, see more details here and on our other pages.

Can parents use Tutor Around?
Absolutely yes! Parents can use Tutor Around to find academic Tutors for their school-age children, someone to help with homework, caregivers for small children, Nannies and Mannies to assist with childcare or even live-in Au Pairs as well as music Tutors, sport Tutors and after-school caretakers. Some family helpers are available for short-term assistance during summer holidays and ski vacations. See the Tutor Around for Students/Parents video for more information.
Can school Administrators use Tutor Around?
Tutor Around is a valuable tool for school Administrators. Using Tutor Around, Administrators can search for qualified early years, primary, middle school and high school teachers. They can input the qualifications, certifications, and subjects taught to find the best teachers for their vacancies. Tutor Around is also useful for School Administrators to find online or in-person assistance for students in their schools who need extra help. School Administrators can create an account with no charge but membership is required to message teacher candidates. Tutor Around allows School Administrators to fill their vacancies easily and without paying exorbitant fees to recruiting agencies. See our page for School Administrators for more information.
Is Tutor Around safe for minors?
The Tutor Around App should not be accessed and used by persons under the age of 18 without parental guidance and supervision. Moreover, Tutor Around should not be accessed and used by any person under the age of 16, regardless of supervision. Always take precautions before exposing yourself or your children to any Tutor. Tutors should take the same precautions regarding Students. Ask for identification and consider meeting in a public place before deciding to meet at a private location in the case of in-person tutoring. Many Tutors have recommendation letters or references on file and can share those with you. In fact, they are encouraged to upload those on their Tutor accounts and share them in Tutor Around app messaging. For extra security, consider selecting an Ambassador Tutor. Ambassador Tutors go through a vetting process as a guarantee of quality. The app also permits users to select Tutors with police checks. While Tutor Around doesn’t check these reports, you can request them directly from the Tutor. Reports are only checked for certain Ambassador Tutors, such as those teaching in schools or Ambassador Nannies. Regardless of the precautions Tutor Around takes, it is ultimately up to the Student to verify the background of the Tutor. For more information, see our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.
How do I sign up to be a Student?
Signing up is easy. Download our app, once it debuts, and create an account. If you would like a reminder of when it is released, please fill out the contact form.
Is travel required?
You don't have to be available to travel to sign up as a Tutor. You can conduct your lessons online if that is more convenient for you. For in-person lessons, you can arrange to meet Students anywhere you would like (a coffee shop, library, your residence, the Student’s residence, etc). Just indicate this on the "Availability" section. Note, however, that Tutors who are available to travel may get more contacts and more tutoring jobs.
What personal information is required?
When developing your Student or Tutor profile, Tutor Around requires your first and last name, date of birth, gender (neutral is an option), email and phone number. Tutor Around wants to ensure people are who they say they are, therefore, it is required for users to provide these details. With the exception of publishing your first name and last initial (Students have the choice to create a job and publish it or remain hidden until they contact a Tutor, in which their first name and last initial will show in messaging), the details of your identity are private and will not be posted. You can read more about this on our privacy policy. Sharing more personal information with other users is your choice to make, which you can do with in-App messaging after a Student or Tutor contacts you.
Is a photo required?
While a photo is not required, it is highly recommended. People want to see who they are contacting and potentially hiring. It feels more personable. It is best to use a professional photo. It is important to not cover your face, unless you are from a culture where this is expected and you choose to do so. No sunglasses, hats, or anything that casts shadows on the face. The photo should be one that you would include on your CV/resume, while at the same time suggesting that you are approachable and friendly. In other words, depending on what type of Tutoring job you are looking for, find a balance between friendly and professional. Any photos that Tutor Around does not judge to be professional and respectful can result in having your account temporarily blocked from public viewing. This includes Student profile images too.

What is my user name or password? How do I retrieve my username and password?
When logging back into the app, select “Forget Password?” to reset your password. You will receive an email verification to reset.
Why was my account deactivated or paused?
Users that post a profile on the App but never select a membership or respond to messages will eventually be removed from the App or have their profile paused and hidden from public view when the account is inactive for an extended period of time. We do not want inactive users. This would create frustration for those seeking to connect with Tutors and Students. Imagine sending out many messages and never getting a response. The App would not be of great value. We aim for efficient and effective user experiences.
How can I cancel my account?
It is easy to cancel your Tutor Around account. Send an email to [email protected] using the email you registered with or the email associated to your Facebook account. In the email, use the subject line “Cancel My Account” and in the email confirm your first and last name, and specify when you want your account cancellation to go into effect. You will get an email confirmation once your account is cancelled.
Questions About Costs & Membership:
What does it mean that Tutor Around Does not Charge commission?
Tutor Around is not an agency and does not take a commission from users. As a Tutor, the money you earn from Students goes entirely to you. As a Student it means that you can hire more Tutors for more lessons and still pay much less than tutoring agencies. Our App is free to download and to create a public Tutor profile for all App users to view. Tutors’ profiles are viewable to all App users. With paid membership, you can easily send your favourite Tutors a message to arrange a lesson. When you are finally ready to message a Tutor or read a message received as a Tutor, select a membership level that is right for you. If you decide to become a member to be able to access all the features of the App, you can choose between three different membership levels giving you full access for 3 months, 6 months or 1 year. Click this link for complete information about membership fees.
How much does Tutor Around cost?
There is no charge to create a Tutor Around account. It is also possible to have free dual accounts as both a Tutor and a Student. We understand that you may want to provide tutoring services in one field of expertise, but might like to take lessons in another field to strengthen a skill set or learn something new. Tutors can publish their profiles and generate interest among Students for free. Students can search for Tutors nearby and online and filter by selecting desired subjects, also for free. Additionally, your free account also permits you to view Tutors’ pricing details and see their availability. To access all the features of the App, however, a paid membership is required. We offer three Memberships levels, 3 months, 6 months and year long and you can cancel at any time. Click here for information about membership fees.
Why pay for a membership?
In order to send or view an in-App message, a Tutor or Student must register and select a membership level. Regardless of having a membership or not, however, all registered users receive push notifications for received messages. If you decide that you want to view these messages in the app, sign up for a membership. If you are not ready to pay for a membership just yet, no problem.
Only pay when you are actively ready to: view messages; pin a Tutor; create a job posting as a Student; view the Student job board, or pin a Student’s job. However, keep in mind that having a membership helps with ranking, since we want to prioritise those actively providing tutoring services and show those users higher in the search results.

What is included with a Tutor Around membership?
All memberships include dual accounts. A user can have both a Tutor account and a Student account without additional fees. This doubles the value for users. As a Student, you can also create a request for tutoring and post it on the job board for other registered members to view. Interested Tutors can pin the job, which sends notification of the Tutor’s interest to the Student. This prompts interested Students to view a Tutor’s profile and message them if they are interested in making contact. Therefore, it is up to the Student to send the first message, permitting Students to ignore notifications they are not interested in. Students do not have to create a job posting. Instead, they can do all the searching themselves by viewing public Tutor profiles. Having a membership can also impact a Tutor’s ranking in the search results, since members are more likely to respond quickly to messages.

The more complete your profile is, the better chance you have at getting tutoring jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, listing qualifications and languages spoken, identifying tutoring subjects, and specifying your availability and pricing details. Having a clear title and well articulated short “About Me” bio is essential to establish credibility and is also required for having a public profile. Given that you only have 500 characters to use, including spaces, focus on what you want to emphasise. Market yourself to spark an interest in readers and stand out. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that you give this real consideration before posting. What other information might I want to consider adding to create an effective profile?
It is advisable to upload references to share within messaging. This can increase your chances of impressing those who contact you. They will want to know what others have said about you and their level of satisfaction with your services.
Also, providing your full CV or resume will showcase your experience and expertise. This helps you justify a higher price over someone advertising a similar service, but with fewer qualifications and less field experience. It helps students understand that there are differences in the quality of Tutors. It is advisable to also upload a cover letter to share with in-app messaging. This will demonstrate your writing level and attention to details, plus it helps personalise your profile.
Any certifications and credentials you hold may be requested by students for review and verification. It will save you time to go ahead and upload these documents to your private profile beforehand. This allows you to easily share them with in-app messaging to whomever you choose later on. Again, the more quickly you respond to a message and the completeness of your response helps to position you over other Tutors.
Moreover, having a police report or FBI check can help Tutors and Nannies working with smaller children to secure tutoring positions. Additionally, CRP certification is often requested by families looking for Nannies, Au Pairs or sports trainers. But many parents, students and those looking for a Tutor do not require or even expect a police check or CPR certification, so if you do not have this, you can still find great tutoring jobs. Providing this just helps you stand out a bit more and may even be required for certain jobs.

Why isn’t my profile showing up in searches?
- Make sure you're logged in with a verified email.
- You will need to complete seven sections of your Tutor profile.
- On the "Person Icon” tab at the bottom of the app, select “I am a Tutor”. There you can begin to start filling out your profile.
- There are some required steps in every section: Personal Details, Short Bio, Occupation & Education, Qualifications, Subjects, Pricing and Availability.
- Once fully completed with all the required fields, Tutor Around administration will receive a prompt to review your profile to ensure it is complete.
- Remember no personal contact details can be included in the parts of your profile that are visible to the public.
- The content of your profile affects the reputation of Tutor Around. We require professional, high quality profiles. If this is the impression Tutor Around administration has when reading your profile, they will then publish it.
- Your profile is then posted or you will receive a message that indicates the changes that need to be made in your profile.
- Once your profile is public, you can easily change aspects of your profile, such as adding new subjects. But keep in mind that Tutor Around often does quality checks. You can read more about this in our Terms and Conditions policy.

- If you just recently set your account to "public", wait at least 5 minutes. It takes this long to be indexed and appear in our search results.
- If your account still isn't working, feel free to send us an email.
How long does it take to get contacted?
There is a great deal of variation. Some Tutors received multiple contacts right away. Others may receive few or no contacts. We recommend that you create and post a profile and see what happens. After all, it is free to create an account. You don’t have to pay for a membership if you don’t receive any messages. If you want to view the job board, you will then need a membership, however.
If you are not getting enough contacts, you may want to improve your Tutor profile. We have many excellent examples on the app and on our website. Some of these are very good models.

What are some ways I can improve my profile?
Make sure you have a professional profile picture. While you do not have to have one, users are much more likely to contact you if you do. Compare your short public bio to that of other examples found on our site. Does your stand out? What about your title located above your languages? This is one of the first things a Student will read. If this isn’t well articulated, a Student might not even view your profile. Also, don’t select too many teaching subjects and qualifications. You might come off as a generalist and not a specialist. Also, selecting too many subjects and qualifications means that a user might not even swipe through all of them. If you have done this, you may want to consider clearing all your subjects and reselect. Select your strongest and most marketable offerings first, as the order you select does impact the order they appear. We are often changing our algorithm, however, so it might be that the order of selecting isn’t mirrored in the exact order, but for the most part, it tends to be.
Why does my profile appear at the end of results?
The large number of Tutors using our app does not allow all profiles to be on the front page. The algorithm regulating Tutor order changes over time in accordance with users' needs, so the position of your profile may fluctuate.
Having a complete profile and an interesting and original bio will make you stand out to students. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that you give this real consideration before posting. Take a look through our website and you will see many excellent examples of profiles for different types of Tutors.

How do you become an Ambassador Tutor?
Ambassador Tutor status is obtained by application. Candidates submit a resumé or CV with supporting documentation which is reviewed and verified by the Tutor Around management. Promising candidates are invited to participate in an online interview. Successful candidates receive Ambassador status for life with no additional fees unless they choose to change their profile with Tutor Around. In that case there is a nominal administrative fee.
Questions Primarily for Tutors About Lesson Pricing & Cancellations:
How much should I charge for Tutoring services?
Providing clear and detailed pricing is important. Understanding how much to charge per lesson, workshop or for a package of services is entirely up to you. Tutor Around doesn’t take a commission, so you don’t need to charge higher prices to cover agency fees. You keep 100% of what you earn. Of course, the level of documented expertise and experience you have in a given field will help determine your pricing. Keep in mind, however, that you may want to charge a slightly lower price for your online students since you won’t have to spend time travelling to and from a location, losing valuable time.
If you are a strong believer in social responsibility and want to democratise tutoring, making it accessible to students with limited financial resources, you may want to have special pricing for those individuals. If you decide to do this, please let us know, as we want to acknowledge your contributions. We place a great deal of importance on economic and social justice. To learn more, see our page on Social Responsibility.

How do I articulate my pricing to students?
On your public Tutor profile, there is a pricing screen. An example of a Tutor's pricing can be found on the home page. The currency, min amount and an explanation of your pricing can be viewed there. You do not need to describe every pricing scenario. Pricing often depends on a multitude of factors, including level of expertise required, preparation time and time commitment for lessons, for example. More discussion about pricing can take place within in-App messaging. Just remember to be clear on your publicly viewable pricing screen, as students will often read this first to determine if they want to make contact.
If you want, you can have a fuller pricing description uploaded on your backend saved as a document. This can be easily shared with in-App messaging. It is wise to consider your pricing for different scenarios beforehand, so you have time to reflect on the value of your time without hesitation. In that way you can respond to a message about your services immediately. Keep in mind that Students tend to message several potential Tutors simultaneously, and the one that responds first with the clearest response and fair pricing given their skillset will generally intrigue the student more and allow you to secure the job.

We strongly recommend having a cancellation policy on your personal pricing page, or uploading a document detailing your cancellation policy to share with in-App messaging.
How do I get paid?
Tutor Around is a platform for connecting Tutors and Students and is not a tutoring agency. We do not handle payment for tutoring services. Payment is a transaction between Tutors and Students.
Most Tutors accept cash or bank transfers. Some Tutors may also issue invoices via Paypal, allowing the Student to pay by credit card and for payment to be made directly to the Tutor’s bank account.
Tutors are not employees of nor independent contractors with Tutor Around. Accordingly, we do not withhold or report any taxes for you. This is your responsibility as a self-employed person.

What should I do if the Student refuses to pay?
Although this is not generally a problem, there is always a slight risk of non-payment as is the case with any business. If it happens, we recommend that you solicit payment using in-App messaging followed by an email and perhaps a telephone call to request payment. The Student may just need a friendly reminder.
Students that you meet on a regular basis tend to be very dependable. Once a personal relationship has been established it is unlikely that the student will fail to pay you.
For new students, you may want to consider requiring payment after each lesson, at least until you have developed a personal and trusting relationship.
You may want to exercise caution with students who are looking for a “quick fix” for a test the next day or an assignment due right away. This is especially true if your lessons are online and you have never actually met the student in person.
Although Tutor Around cannot take responsibility for payment of tutoring services rendered, we encourage you to use our in-App messaging for all contact with your students. In this way, if there is a question about honest use or abuse of the app, you will have a record of your communication. Tutor Around cannot assume responsibility for non-payment on the part of Students. See out privacy policy and terms and conditions for details.
